2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 19

Brighton 4-2 Tottenham

Brighton took the lead after just 11 minutes through a fierce strike from Jack Hinshelwood before Brighton were awarded a penalty after Dejan Kulusevski pulled back Danny Welbeck. Joao Pedro then stepped up and scored to double the hosts’ lead after 23 minutes. James Milner then smashed the post before Richarlison hit the post for Tottenham. In the Second Half, Brighton’s lead extended to 3 as Pervis Estupinan scored with a fantastic strike! Brighton were then awarded another penalty after Giovanni Lo Celso fouled Evan Ferguson which resulted in Joao Pedro converting from 12 yards again to make it Brighton 4, Tottenham 0! However, Spurs were able to get one back through Alejo Veliz after a poor mistake by Lewis Dunk before Ben Davies made it 4-2 with a headed finish in the 85th minute. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also hit the post for Tottenham which is quite mad! Overall, this is a good win for Brighton and Hove Albion. The Seagulls rise to 8th in the table and they go to West Ham for an exciting fixture next time out. As for Tottenham Hotspur, they missed a big opportunity here. Spurs drop to 5t in the league and they face Bournemouth in their next game on New Year’s Eve.

Brentford 1-4 Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled out a superb performance to smash Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. After 13 minutes, Wolves were in front as Mario Lemina headed home from close range after a great cross from Pablo Sarabia. Then, straight from kick-off, Wolves doubled their lead as Hwang Hee-Chan scored after a shocking back pass by Nathan Collins. Just two minutes later and Brentford had one back though as Yoane Wissa finished well to make it 2-1. Vitaly Janelt then had a good opportunity to score, but he could only head the ball straight into the hands of Jose Sa before Wolves were 3-1 up in the 28th minute as Hwang Hee-Chan scored again. Whilst the defending by Brentford was questionable, Hwang’s composure and finish was world-class. Nathan Collins then had a great chance to score which he failed to take (he headed the ball straight over the bar) before Matheus Cunha hit the post in the Second Half. And then, in the 79th minute, another terrible mistake by Nathan Collins resulted in Jean-Ricner Bellegarde scoring to wrap up a terrific victory for Wolves. In the end, is it time to start being worried about Brentford? The Bees stay 14th in the table and they go to Crystal Palace next time out. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, what a superb result for them. Wolves remain 11th in the league and they host Everton in their next game tomorrow afternoon.

Manchester United 3-2 Aston Villa

Manchester United came from two goals down to pick up an important victory over Aston Villa. Aston Villa found themselves in front after 21 minutes as John McGinn’s free-kick missed everyone and found its way into the back of the Man United net. 5 minutes later and Villa’s lead doubled thanks to a nice finish from Leander Dendoncker. The defending by Manchester United here was absolutely awful. 3 minutes into the Second Half and Man United thought they’d got one back through Alejandro Garnacho. However, the goal was ruled out for a tight offside. 11 minutes later though and Garnacho did have his goal after a poor mistake by Diego Carlos. In the 71st minute, United were level as Alejandro Garnacho scored again (after his effort took a deflection off Diego Carlos). Jonny Evans then pulled out a really good block to keep John McGinn’s effort out before, in the 82nd minute, Rasmus Hojlund finally scored in the Premier League to give Manchester United a precious lead! Overall, Manchester United needed a win like this. United move up to 7th in the table and they go to Nottingham Forest next time out. As for Aston Villa, this feels like a big slip-up for them. Villa stay third in the league and they host Burnley tomorrow.

Sheffield United 2-3 Luton

Luton Town came from behind to pick up a big victory over Sheffield United. Luton took the lead after 17 minutes as Alfie Doughty scored after a poor mistake from Wesley Foderingham. Sheffield United then hit the crossbar before they found their equaliser in the 61st minute through Ollie McBurnie. In the 69th minute, Anel Ahmedhodzic was able to find the back of the net after a bit of a “melee” to give Sheffield United the lead. However, in the 77th minute, Luton were back level through a Jack Robinson own goal. And then, in the 81st minute, Anis Ben Slimane unfortunately put the ball into the back of his own net to put Luton back in front! In the end, this loss will hurt a lot for Sheffield United. The Blades stay bottom of the league and they go to Manchester City next time out. As for Luton Town, this is a big win for them. The Hatters remain 18th in the table and they host Chelsea in their next game tomorrow.

Everton 1-3 Manchester City

Manchester City managed to come from behind to pick up a big victory away at Everton. Jordan Pickford pulled out a good double save to keep out Matheus Nunes and Julian Alvarez’s efforts before Everton took the lead in the 29th minute through Jack Harrison. I have no idea what Rodri was doing, but Dwight McNeil’s ball across was nice. Ederson then pulled out a good save to deny Harrison a second before Phil Foden fired one into the back of the net to level the game for Manchester City in the 53rd minute. Man City were then awarded a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Amadou Onana and this led to Julian Alvarez stepping up and scoring to give City the lead after 64 minutes. And then, in the 86th minute, a poor mistake by Jordan Pickford allowed Bernardo Silva to seal the victory for Manchester City with a nice finish. In the end, it’s back to reality for Everton. The Toffees drop to 17th in the table and they go to Wolves next time out. As for Manchester City, this is a big win for them. City move up to 4th in the league and they face Sheffield United in their next game tomorrow.

Newcastle 1-3 Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest pulled out a great performance to hand Newcastle United another defeat. Newcastle were awarded a (slightly questionable) penalty after Alexander Isak was brought down and it was Isak who stepped up and scored to give Newcastle the lead after 23 minutes. Anthony Elanga then saw his effort saved by Martin Dubravka, but he really should’ve squared it for teammate Chris Wood. Anyway, Elanga then learnt his lesson as he set up Chris Wood who equalised for Nottingham Forest at additional time at the end of the First Half. In the 53rd minute, Nottingham Forest took the lead as Chris Wood scored his second goal of the game in really good fashion. In the 60th minute, Chris Wood showed great composure to seal his hat-trick and give Notts Forest a 2-goal cushion in the process. In the end, it’s another disappointing defeat for Newcastle United. The Magpies drop to 9th in the league and their next game is away to Liverpool on New Year’s Day. As for Nottingham Forest, this is a great win for them. Forest rise to 16th in the table and they host Manchester United next time out.

Bournemouth 3-0 Fulham

Despite being kept out once, Justin Kluivert wouldn’t give up as he fired home to give Bournemouth the lead just before Halftime. Bernd Leno should’ve done a lot better here, but Alex Scott also deserves a lot of praise. In the Second Half, Bournemouth were awarded a penalty after Joao Palhinha brought down Antoine Semenyo before Dominic Solanke converted from 12 yards (out) to double the hosts’ lead in the 62nd minute. And then, in the 93rd minute, Luis Sinisterra wrapped up the victory for Bournemouth with a super strike! Overall, AFC Bournemouth keep up their amazing run of form. The Cherries stay 12th in the league and they go to Tottenham next time out. As for Fulham, it’s now three defeats in a row (in the league) for them. The Cottagers remain 13th in the table and they host London Rivals Arsenal in their next game on New Year’s Eve.

Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace

Tyrick Mitchell did well to deny Ian Maatsen putting Chelsea in front before Chelsea did have the lead after just 13 minutes through Mykhaylo Mudryk. Mudryk then had a good chance to make it 2-0, but he was denied well by Dean Henderson before Crystal Palace equalised in additional time at the end of the First Half through Michael Olise. In the Second Half, Nicolas Jackson had a great opportunity which he somehow missed before Jackson thought he’d given Chelsea the lead in the 76th minute. However, his goal was ruled out for offside. And then, late in the game, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after a small bit of contact between Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze. Madueke then stepped up and scored to secure an important victory for Chelsea in the 89th minute. In the end, Chelsea can be happy with this result. The Blues remain 10th in the table and they face Luton in their next game tomorrow. As for Crystal Palace, they’ve conceded yet another late goal. The Eagles stay 15th in the league and they host Brentford in an important game next time out.

Arsenal 0-2 West Ham

West Ham United pulled out a terrific performance to stun Arsenal at the Emirates. After 13 minutes, West Ham were ahead as Tomas Soucek scored after a fumble around the box. Whilst the ball was close to going out, I think sticking with the on-field decision was the right call. Bukayo Saka then hit the post for Arsenal before, in the Second Half, Konstantinos Mavropanos scored against his old club to make it 2-0 to West Ham after 55 minutes! Gabriel Jesus then had a really good opportunity which he made a complete mess of before Alphonse Areola pulled out a decent stop to deny Leandro Trossard. At the end of the game, West Ham were awarded a penalty after Declan Rice (of all people) brought down Emerson. However, the game finished 2-0 as David Raya saved Said Benrahma’s poor penalty effort. In the end, this is a poor result for Arsenal. The Gunners drop to second in the league and they go to Fulham next time out. As for West Ham United, this is a huge win for them. The Hammers stay 6th in the table and their next game is a big one at home to Brighton in the New Year.

Burnley 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool only needed 6 minutes to take the lead thanks to a great finish by Darwin Nunez. Mohamed Salah was then denied by a good save from James Trafford before Salah had another chance which he smashed the crossbar with. In the Second Half, Harvey Elliott thought he’d made it 2-0 to Liverpool, but his goal was ruled out for offside against Mo Salah. Personally, I’m not a fan of this decision as I don’t think Trafford was going to be able to save it anyway. Johann Berg Gudmundsson then had a great chance for Burnley which he failed to take (he really should’ve scored) before Diogo Jota finished well to seal the victory for Liverpool in the 90th minute. In the end, it’s straight back to losing ways for Burnley. The Clarets stay 19th in the table and they go to Aston Villa next time out. As for Liverpool, it’s another 3 points in the bag for them. The Reds are now top of the league and they face Newcastle at home in their next game on New Year’s Day.
