2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 15

Luton 3-4 Arsenal

Another late goal was enough for Arsenal to nick a victory at the expense of Luton Town. Arsenal took the lead through Gabriel Martinelli in the 20th minute, but it didn’t take long for Luton to respond as Gabriel Osho headed home in the 25th minute to make it 1-1. Just before Halftime, Arsenal retook the lead thanks to a calm header by Gabriel Jesus. In the 49th minute, Luton were back level as Elijah Adebayo headed the ball into the back of the net after a terrible bit of goalkeeping by David Raya. In the 57th minute, Luton took the lead as Ross Barkley scored after some more awful goalkeeping by Raya. Just 3 minutes later and the visitors were back level though as Kai Havertz tapped the ball past Thomas Kaminski. And then, in the 97th minute, Declan Rice headed home to “steal” a result away from the hosts. In the end, Luton Town will be gutted to have left this game with nothing. The Hatters are now back inside the Relegation Zone (in 18th place) and they host Manchester City in another big test this Sunday. As for Arsenal, that goal could prove to be quite crucial down the line. The Gunners remain the league leaders and they go to Aston Villa in a massive game next time out.

Fulham 5-0 Nottingham Forest

Fulham scored 5 as they thumped Nottingham Forest at Craven Cottage. Andreas Pereira hit the post with a good free-kick effort early on before Fulham took the lead in the 30th minute thanks to Alex Iwobi. 4 minutes later and Fulham’s lead doubled as Raul Jimenez smashed the ball into the roof of the net before, in the 54th minute, Raul had his second goal of the game and this was just Classic Jimenez! Alex Iwobi then had his second goal of the game in the 73rd minute before Tom Cairney wrapped up the hosts’ 5-star performance in the 86th minute. This goal was a complete mess from a Notts Forest point of view. Overall, this is more like it from Fulham. The Cottagers move up to 12th in the table and they host West Ham next time out. As for Nottingham Forest, they’re a mess right now. Forest drop to 16th in the league and their next game is a big one away to Wolves.

Everton 3-0 Newcastle

Everton pulled out a terrific performance to thrash Newcastle United at Goodison Park. Miguel Almiron had a pretty good chance to put Newcastle in front early on, but he poorly guided his effort comfortably into the hands of Jordan Pickford. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then had his own chance which saw him head the ball into the arms of Martin Dubravka before both him and Dwight McNeil failed to give Everton the lead. Alexander Isak then had a really good opportunity which he put wide before Calvert-Lewin potentially performed the worst miss of the season! How he didn’t score I’ll never know! In the Second Half, Anthony Gordon had a good opportunity to score which he failed to take before finally, in the 79th minute, Dwight McNeil capitalised off a mistake by Kieran Trippier to fire Everton in front. Amazingly, Abdoulaye Doucoure then made it 2-0 to Everton thanks to another mistake by Kieran Trippier before Beto rounded out a super night for the hosts with a 96th-minute goal. Overall, what a great result this is for Everton. The Toffees move out of the Relegation Zone (and into 17th) and they host Chelsea next time out. As for Newcastle United, what a terrible performance from them. The Magpies drop to 7th in the table and their next game is a big one away to Tottenham.

Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea

After a VAR check, Manchester United were awarded a penalty after Enzo Fernandez stood on the foot of Antony. Bruno Fernandes stepped up from 12 yards only to see his weak penalty pushed away by Robert Sanchez. However, in the 19th minute, Manchester United did have the lead thanks to Scott McTominay. Robert Sanchez then pulled out a crazy double save to deny McTominay a second before Nicolas Jackson showed a lack of composure when he was in one-on-one against Andre Onana. In the 45th minute, Chelsea were level as Cole Palmer scored against his old rival. In the 69th minute, Man United retook the lead as Scott McTominay scored yet another goal. Alejandro Garnacho then had a great chance to end the game, but he guided the ball just wide of the target before Armando Broja hit the post for the visitors. Overall, this was a good win for Manchester United. United move up to 6th in the league and they host Bournemouth next time out. As for Chelsea, it’s another disappointing result for them. The Blues stay 10th in the table and their next game is away to Everton on Sunday.

Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

West Ham United pulled out a great performance to stun London Rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham took the lead after just 11 minutes thanks to a terrific header from Cristian Romero. Lucas Paqueta then had a really good opportunity to equalise which he completely made a mess of before Kurt Zouma nearly scored an own goal. Luckily for him, the ball hit the post and went out for a corner. In the 52nd minute, West Ham found their equaliser as Jarrod Bowen scored yet another goal. Tottenham were very unfortunate here as the ball cannoned off of Ben Davies and into the path of Bowen. Richarlison then had a golden opportunity which he somehow put wide before, in the 74th minute, James Ward-Prowse fired West Ham in front after a comedy of errors by Spurs. In the end, Tottenham Hotspur will be kicking themselves that they lost this game. Spurs remain 5th in the league and their next game is a big one at home to Newcastle. As for West Ham United, this is a great result for them. The Hammers stay 9th in the table and they go to Fulham next time out.

Brighton 2-1 Brentford

After some poor defending by Jan Paul van Hecke, he then decided to bring down Vitaly Janelt in the box which left the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot. Bryan Mbeumo was the man who stepped up for Brentford and he coolly converted from 12 yards to give the visitors the lead after 27 minutes. Just 4 minutes later though and Brighton were level thanks to a lovely strike from Pascal Gross. Early in the Second Half, Yoane Wissa saw his effort blocked on the line before Jack Hinshelwood scored his first-ever senior goal to give Brighton the lead in the 52nd minute. Overall, Brighton will definetly be happy with this result. The Seagulls remain in 8th place and their next game is at home to Burnley tomorrow. As for Brentford, they probably should’ve done more in this one. The Bees stay 11th in the table and they go to Sheffield United next time out.

Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool

Chris Wilder’s return to Sheffield United ended with a defeat at home to Liverpool. After a mistake by Joe Gomez, James McAtee had a great chance to score which he failed to take as his effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. These are the chances that you have to take when you’re at the bottom of the league. In the 37th minute, Liverpool took the lead as Virgil van Dijk finished well. Van Dijk then had another good opportunity, but this time he headed the ball over the bar before, in the Second Half, Wesley Foderingham pulled out a terrific save to deny Mohamed Salah from doubling the visitors' lead. Darwin Nunez then had a good opportunity which Foderingham saved well before Liverpool sealed the victory in the 94th minute thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai. I have to say, the defending by Sheffield United was absolutely woeful! In the end, it’s another defeat for Sheffield United. The Blades remain bottom of the league and they host Brentford in a huge match next time out. As for Liverpool, it’s another victory for them. The Reds stay second in the league and their next game is away to Crystal Palace tomorrow.

Crystal Palace 0-2 Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth continued their good run of form at the expense of a struggling Crystal Palace. Sam Johnstone pulled out a good stop to deny Antoine Semenyo from giving Bournemouth the lead, but that didn’t stop the visitors from taking the lead as Marcos Senesi headed home from close range to give Bournemouth the lead after 25 minutes. After Neto pushed out Jordan Ayew’s effort, Illia Zabarnyi pulled out a terrific block to deny Odsonne Edouard from giving Crystal Palace an equaliser before, in the Second Half, Jefferson Lerma smashed the post. And then, in the 91st minute, Bournemouth sealed all 3 points as Kieffer Moore headed home from just a couple of yards out. In the end, this was a really disappointing defeat for Crystal Palace. The Eagles drop to 14th in the table and their next game is at home to Liverpool tomorrow. As for AFC Bournemouth, this is a great victory for them. The Cherries move up to 15th in the league and they go to Manchester United next time out.

Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City

Aston Villa moved above Manchester City in the Premier League Table after a dominant display. Ederson pulled out a good save to deny Pau Torres early on before Emiliano Martinez pulled out a terrific double save to stop Erling Haaland from putting Manchester City in front. In the Second Half, Ederson pulled out another good save to keep out John McGinn before, in the 74th minute, Aston Villa were ahead as Leon Bailey’s deflected effort went flying past Ederson and into the back of the City net. Douglas Luiz then came close to doubling Villa’s advantage, but his effort could only hit the post. Overall, what a performance and result this was for Aston Villa. Villa are now third in the league and they host Arsenal in a huge game tomorrow evening. As for Manchester City, they need to find their spark again. City drop to 4th in the table and they go to Luton next time out.

Wolves 1-0 Burnley

Pablo Sarabia had a good chance to put Wolves in front early on, but he poorly lofted the ball well over the bar before Daniel Bentley pulled out a really good double save to deny both Jay Rodriguez and Josh Brownhill. After a mistake from Burnley, Wolves punished them as Hwang Hee-Chan scored again to put the hosts in front after 42 minutes. Overall, Wolverhampton Wanderers can be happy with another 3 points. Wolves (actually) drop to 13th in the table and they host Nottingham Forest next time out. As for Burnley, it’s another defeat for them. The Clarets are now 19th in the league and their next game is away to Brighton tomorrow.
