2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 14

Liverpool 4-3 Fulham

Two late goals were enough for Liverpool to break Fulham hearts in a 7-goal thriller! Liverpool were in front after 20 minutes thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick effort coming back off the bar and hitting Bernd Leno which was enough for the ball to find the back of the net. However, just 4 minutes later, Fulham were level as Harry Wilson scored after some questionable goalkeeping by Caoimhin Kelleher. In the 38th minute, Liverpool were back in front through an absolute wonder goal by Alexis Mac Allister. In the third minute of additional time at the end of the First Half, it was 2-2 as Kenny Tete poked home from close range. The goalkeeping by Kelleher was even worse here than the first Fulham goal. Skipping forward to the 80th minute and Fulham found themselves ahead as Bobby Reid headed home from close range after a great chipped ball across from Tom Cairney. However, in the 87th minute, Liverpool were back level thanks to a really nice finish from Wataru Endo. And then, just a minute later, Liverpool had their winner through a really nice goal by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Overall, they may have gotten away with one here, but fair play to Liverpool for picking up the victory. The Reds rise to second in the league and their next game is away to Sheffield United on Wednesday. As for Fulham, what a devastating defeat for them. The Cottagers are now 14th in the table and they host Nottingham Forest next time out.

Manchester City 3-3 Tottenham

Drama and late goals saw Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur draw 3-all at the Etihad. After some woeful defending by Jeremy Doku, Tottenham found themselves in front through Heung-Min Son. Having said that, the Goalkeeping by Ederson wasn’t great either. Amazingly, just 3 minutes later and Manchester City were level as Son kneed the ball into the back of his own net! Tottenham then made an absolute mess of trying to play out from the back, but luckily for them, Erling Haaland somehow missed an open goal! Jeremy Doku then smashed both the post and the bar with the same shot before, in the 31st minute, Man City did have the lead as Phil Foden finished off what was a really well-worked team goal. Also, it’s worth mentioning that Julian Alvarez then hit the post just a few minutes later. After a poor Second Half performance by Manchester City, Tottenham made them pay as Giovani Lo Celso scored with a really nice finish to make it 2-2 after 69 minutes. In the 81st minute, City thought they had their winner as Jack Grealish scored after a really nice pass from Erling Haaland. Yves Bissouma really should’ve just whacked the ball up the field. However, it wasn't to be for Man City as in the 90th minute, Spurs had their equaliser as Dejan Kulusevski’s headed effort crashed off the bar and into the back of the net to earn a valuable point for the visits. However, the drama wasn’t done there as after the referee (Simon Hooper) originally decided to play advantage after Emerson Royal fouled Erling Haaland, he then decided to blow for a foul despite Jack Grealish being in on goal! I really cannot understand how this guy is still in the Premier League because he has made some woeful decisions this season. In the end, whilst Manchester City will rightly be angry about how the game ended, they really have only themselves to blame for not winning this game. City are now third in the league and their next game is a big one at Aston Villa. As for Tottenham Hotspur, this is a very good result for them. Spurs remain 5th in the table and they host London Rivals West Ham next time out.

Burnley 5-0 Sheffield United

Burnley finally picked up their first victory of the season at Turf Moor with an emphatic victory over Sheffield United. Burnley got off to the perfect start as they took the lead through a Jay Rodriguez header after just 15 seconds! In the 29th minute, Burnley doubled their lead as Jacob Bruun Larsen finished calmly after Sheffield United made it far too easy for them. Right before Halftime, things got worse for Sheffield United as Ollie McBurnie was sent off for a second Yellow card. He arguably should’ve already been sent off before then. In the 73rd minute, Burnley wrapped up all 3 points as Zeki Amdouni scored a really good goal. However, the hosts weren’t done there as Luca Koleosho made it 4-0 just two minutes later before Josh Brownhill got Burnley’s fifth in the 80th minute with a really good strike. Overall, this is exactly the type of result that Burnley needed. The Clarets move off the bottom of the table (and up to 19th) and they go to Wolves next time out. As for Sheffield United, what a terrible day for them. The Blades are now bottom of the league and their next game is at home to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Chelsea 3-2 Brighton

Chelsea were able to hold on to beat Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge despite playing the entire Second Half with 10 men. Chelsea took the lead after 17 minutes through Enzo Fernandez and I have to praise Benoit Badiashile as he did so well to keep the danger alive. 4 minutes later and Chelsea had their second goal from a corner as this time, Levi Colwill was there to tap home from close range to score against the club he played on Loan for last year. Brighton then got themselves back into the game as Facundo Buonanotte scored in the 43rd minute with a superb finish. Just two minutes later and things got worse for Chelsea as Captain Conor Gallagher was shown a second Yellow Card. This was a really stupid tackle for Gallagher to make when he’s already been booked. Midway through the Second Half, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after James Milner tripped up Mykhaylo Mudryk. Enzo Fernandez was the man who stepped up and scored for the hosts to score his second and Chelsea’s third goal of the afternoon. Joao Pedro was then able to get one back for Brighton in the 92nd minute, but it wasn’t quite enough to help the visitors pick up a positive result. In the end, this is a good win for Chelsea. The Blues remain 10th in the table and their next game is a big one at Manchester United. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, they should’ve done more in this game. The Seagulls stay 8th in the league and they host Brentford next time out.

Brentford 3-1 Luton

In the First Half, Brentford were screaming for a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Issa Kabore. Whilst I do feel like Kabore would’ve been unlucky to have had this decision go against him, his arm was definitely out. Anyway, less than 5 minutes into the Second Half and Brentford were in front thanks to Neal Maupay. Brentford were slightly fortunate here, but Maupay still had to score (which he did). In the 56th minute, Brentford’s lead doubled as Ben Mee scored after the ball took a big deflection off Carlton Morris. More bad luck for the visitors. However, Luton weren’t out of the game yet as in the 76th minute, Jacob Brown made it 2-1 with a really calm and composed finish. And then, in the 81st minute, Brentford restored their two-goal advantage as Shandon Baptiste scored after a massive scramble in the penalty area. Luton Goalie Thomas Kaminski arguably could’ve and should’ve done better. Overall, this was a game Brentford should’ve won and it’s a game that Brentford did win. The Bees stay 11th in the table and they go to Brighton next time out. As for Luton Town, they were slightly unlucky to lose this game. The Hatters remain in 17th place and they host Arsenal in an exciting tie tomorrow night.

Bournemouth 2-2 Aston Villa

After originally giving the ball away poorly, the ball found its way back to Antoine Semenyo who finished well to give Bournemouth the lead after just 10 minutes. Diego Carlos gave the ball away far to cheaply here. 10 minutes later and Aston Villa were level as Leon Bailey scored a nice solo goal. Antoine Semenyo, who’d already been booked just a few minutes earlier, then decided to pull Leon Bailey back, but the referee decided against showing the Bournemouth Winger a second Yellow card. I really don’t understand this decision at all. Anyway, Aston Villa then thought they’d taken the lead in the 22nd minute through Diego Carlos, but his goal was ruled out for offside. Emiliano Martinez then pulled out a decent save to deny Semenyo his second goal of the game before Ezri Konsa pulled out a hell of a tackle to stop Justin Kluivert from getting a shot at goal. In the 52nd minute, Bournemouth retook the lead as Dominic Solanke scored a great goal. Solanke then thought he’d scored again, but he was denied superbly well by Emi Martinez before Jhon Duran’s deflected effort came back out off the post. However, in the 90th minute, Aston Villa had their equaliser as Ollie Watkins scored with a terrific header. In the end, AFC Bournemouth will be gutted that they weren’t quite able to hold on for all 3 points. The Cherries stay 16th in the table and they go to Crystal Palace next time out. As for Aston Villa, they clearly need to improve their away form if they are going to compete right at the top of the Premier League. Villa remain 4th in the league and their next game is a big one at home to Manchester City.

Arsenal 2-1 Wolves

Arsenal found themselves ahead against Wolves just 6 minutes in through Bukayo Saka. Saka did well to score, but I do feel like Wolves should’ve defended the situation better. 7 minutes later and Arsenal doubled their lead as Martin Odegaard finished off what was a terrifically worked goal by the hosts. Gabriel Martinelli then nearly made it 3-0, but his effort could only connect with the post before, in the Second Half, Daniel Bentley did well to deny Leandro Trossard. Having said that, Trossard should’ve done a lot better. In the 86th minute, Wolves were then all of a sudden back in the contest as Matheus Cunha put the ball into the back of the net. I have no idea what Oleksandr Zinchenko was playing at, but that shouldn’t take away from what was a really good finish by the Brazilian. Eddie Nketiah then had a golden chance to restore Arsenal’s 2-goal cushion, but he could only hit the post. In the end, this was a pretty straightforward win for Arsenal. The Gunners remain top of the league and their next game is away to Luton tomorrow night. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, they won’t be too disheartened about losing this game. Wolves are now 13th in the table and they host Burnley next time out.

West Ham 1-1 Crystal Palace

West Ham took the lead after 13 minutes thanks to Mohamed Kudus, but they should also thank Sam Johnstone as his Goalkeeping here was terrible. Joachim Andersen’s free-kick effort then took a big deflection and went just wide of the post before Odsonne Edouard missed a golden opportunity to equalise early in the Second Half. However, Edouard made amends for his previous miss as he finished calmly to level the game up at 1-all after 53 minutes. What on earth was Konstantinos Mavropanos doing here? Emerson then had a great chance to put West Ham back in front thanks to a terrific ball by Lucas Paqueta, but the Full-Back could only smash the ball high and wide. Jarrod Bowen then had a decent chance to win for West Ham in the 94th minute, but he tamely headed the ball straight into the hands of Sam Johnstone. In the end, West Ham United will be disappointed that they didn’t win this game. The Hammers stay 9th in the league and their next game is away to Tottenham on Thursday. As for Crystal Palace, this was a decent result for them. The Eagles rise to 12th in the table and they host Bournemouth next time out.

Newcastle 1-0 Manchester United

Newcastle United won comfortably against Manchester United even if the scoreline might not suggest it. Andre Onana pulled out a good save early on to deny Miguel Almiron from putting Newcastle in front before Alexander Isak’s effort went just wide of the target. Kieran Trippier was then really unlucky as his free kick effort came back out off the crossbar before, in the 55th minute, Newcastle finally had their opener as Anthony Gordon tapped home from close range after a great ball across from Kieran Trippier. And then, in the 88th minute, Man United put the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was rightly ruled out as Harry Maguire was in an offside position. Overall, this was pretty comfortable stuff for Newcastle United. The Magpies move up to 6th in the league and their next game is away to Everton on Thursday. As for Manchester United, they really didn’t do anything in this game. United drop to 7th in the table and they host Chelsea in a big game next time out.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Everton

Beto had a really good chance to put Everton in front in the First Half, but he showed a lack of composure as he blasted the ball over the bar. Anthony Elanga then guided the ball just wide of the target before Murillo pulled out a terrific goal-line clearance to deny Dwight McNeil from giving Everton the lead. In the Second Half, Felipe hit the post for Nottingham Forest before the Forest players were asking for a penalty after Abdoulaye Doucoure pulled out Ryan Yates. I do think Doucoure got away with one a little bit here. In the 67th minute, Everton had their lead as Dwight McNeil smashed the ball into the back of the net from close range. In the end, it’s another disappointing defeat for Nottingham Forest. Forest stay 15th in the table and they go to Fulham next time out. As for Everton, this was a good win for them. The Toffees are now 18th in the league and their next game is at home to Newcastle on Thursday.
