2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 13

Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea

Newcastle United returned to winning ways in emphatic style as they thrashed Chelsea at St. James’ Park. After 13 minutes, Newcastle found the lead thanks to Alexander Isak. Isak’s finish was good, but the pass from Lewis Miley was nothing short of terrific. In the 23rd minute, Chelsea were level thanks to a fantastic free kick by Raheem Sterling. Newcastle then should’ve found themselves back in front, but Joelinton somehow missed a sitter from about three yards out as he headed the ball wide of the target. Nick Pope then pulled out a really good save to deny Enzo Fernandez before Kieran Trippier hit the bar from his own free-kick attempt. In the Second Half, Newcastle retook the lead through a Jamaal Lascelles header after a brilliant cross from Anthony Gordon. Less than a minute later and Newcastle were 3-1 up as Joelinton scored after a terrible mistake by Thiago Silva. This was a very uncharacteristic error by the Brazilian Centre Back. Things then got worse for Chelsea as Club Captain Reece James was sent off for a second Yellow card in the 73rd minute before Anthony Gordon finished the visitors off in the 83rd minute to make it Newcastle 4, Chelsea 1! Overall, this was exactly the kind of result that Newcastle United have been looking for. The Magpies stay 7th and their next two games are big ones away to PSG (tonight) and at home to Manchester United (on Saturday). As for Chelsea, this is a shocking result for them. The Blues stay 10th in the table and they host Brighton in an interesting game next time out.

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion finally got back to winning ways in the Premier League at the expense of Nottingham Forest. Nottingham Forest got off to the perfect start as Anthony Elanga headed home to put Forest in front after just 3 minutes. In the 26th minute, Brighton were level thanks to a really nice finish by Evan Ferguson. In the 4th minute of additional time at the end of the First Half, Brighton found themselves in front through a bullet header from Joao Pedro. In the Second Half, Brighton were awarded a penalty after Chris Wood brought down Joao Pedro. It was Pedro who then stepped up from 12 yards out and finished calmly to score his second and Brighton’s third of the afternoon. Nottingham Forest were then awarded a penalty of their own as Callum Hudson-Odoi was brought down by Jack Hinshelwood. However, in a moment of pure madness and stupidity, Lewis Dunk was sent off for receiving two Yellow cards in the space of about 15 seconds. Morgan Gibbs-White then stepped up and scored to give Forest some life in the game. And then, Ryan Yates had a great to equalise for Notts Forest in the 100th minute, but he was denied by a really good stop from Bart Verbruggen. In the end, Nottingham Forest will be disappointed to have lost this game. Forest are now 15th in the league and they host Everton next time out. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, they needed this win badly (and they got it). The Seagulls remain 8th in the table and their next two games are away to AEK Athens and Chelsea.

Fulham 3-2 Wolves

Fulham just about edged past Wolverhampton Wanderers in a game where 3 penalties were awarded! It didn’t take too long for the first goal of the game as Alex Iwobi scored after a nice bit of build-up play to give Fulham the lead after just 7 minutes. Hwang Hee-Chan then hit the crossbar for Wolves before his side were level through Matheus Cunha. The ball from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was really good and Cunha’s finish was a calm one. In the Second Half, Fulham were awarded a penalty after Tom Cairney was brought down by Nelson

Semedo. This is a baffling decision in my opinion as Semedo clearly got a touch on the ball first. Anyway, Willian stepped up and scored to restore Fulham’s lead in the 59th minute. Wolves were then awarded a penalty of their own after Tim Ream brought down Hwang Hee-Chan, and personally, I’m very surprised that Ream wasn’t shown a second Yellow card for this offence. In terms of the penalty, Hwang stepped up and scored to continue his fine season whilst levelling the game up at 2-2. And then, in additional time at the end of the game, Fulham were awarded a second penalty after Joao Gomes “tripped” Harry Wilson. I think Wolves have a genuine case for VAR and the English referees being against them because this is even worse than the first decision. Willian then stepped up and scored again to win the game for Fulham in the 94th minute! In the end, this is a win that Fulham have needed for a while. The Cottagers move up to 14th in the table and their next game is away to Liverpool. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, I don’t really know what they’re supposed to do anymore. Wolves remain 12th and they go to Arsenal next time out.

Sheffield United 1-3 Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth managed to pick up a crucial 3 points away to struggling Sheffield United. Bournemouth took the lead after 12 minutes through Marcus Tavernier and personally, I feel that this was a terrific team goal. Tavernier then should’ve made it 2-0, but he could only blast the ball over the bar before Bournemouth did have their second right at the end of the First Half through Justin Kluivert. Wesley Foderingham will probably have nightmares of his mistake for a while to come because it was absolutely atrocious. 6 minutes into the Second Half and Bournemouth extended their advantage to 3 as Marcus Tavernier got his second of the afternoon. Dominic Solanke really should’ve then made it 4-0 to the visitors, but he placed the ball just wide of the target before Foderingham pulled out a good save to deny Kluivert a second goal. Ollie McBurnie was then able to get one back for Sheffield U in the 97th minute, but it really wasn’t anything more than just a consolation goal. In the end, Sheffield United look like a bit of a mess right now. The Blades remain inside the Relegation Zone (in 19th) and they go to Burnley in a massive matchup next time out. As for AFC Bournemouth, this will ease some pressure off their shoulders for sure. The Cherries stay 16th in the table and their next game is at home to Aston Villa.

Everton 0-3 Manchester United

Manchester United picked up their best win of the season in some style at an angry Goodison Park. After just 3 minutes, Manchester United took the lead through a quite ridiculous overhead kick by Alejandro Garnacho. This is certainly a goal worth watching. Andre Onana then pulled out a really good double save to keep the game at 1-0 before Kobbie Mainoo cleared the ball off the line. Abdoulaye Doucoure then had a great opportunity which he completely made a mess of before, in the Second Half, Anthony Martial was booked for diving. However, the replays clearly showed that Martial was in fact fouled by Ashley Young and VAR agreed so Martial’s Yellow card was rescinded and a penalty was awarded. Marcus Rashford was the man to step up to the spot and he scored with a terrific penalty kick to give Manchester United a 2-goal cushion after 56 minutes. Idrissa Gana Gueye then forced Andre Onana to pull off a really good save to keep Everton off the scoresheet before Anthony Martial wrapped up the three points for Man United with a calm 75th-minute finish. Vitalii Mykolenko then nearly got the Everton fans something to celebrate, but unfortunately for them, Mykolenko’s effort could only hit the crossbar. In the end, this wasn’t at all the result that Everton fans were hoping for. The Toffees stay 19th in the table and they go to Nottingham Forest next time out. As for Manchester United, this was by far their best win of the season. United remain in 6th and their next two games are big away ties at Galatasaray and Newcastle.

Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa

After starting the season unbeaten, Tottenham Hotspur suffered their third consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of a brilliant Aston Villa side. Dejan Kulusevski looked certain to give Tottenham the lead early on, but he somehow managed to hit the post before Tottenham were able to take the lead thanks to a smashing strike by Giovani Lo Celso. Lo Celso got so much power on his effort and a deflection off of Diego Carlos ultimately meant Emiliano Martinez wasn’t able to keep the ball from flying into the back of the net. Almost immediately, Aston Villa thought they were level through Ollie Watkins, but his goal was ruled out for offside. I hate the stupid VAR offside lines! Not to worry though, as in the 7th minute of First Half stoppage time, Villa were level thanks to a powerful header from Pau Torres. The ball from Douglas Luiz was also superb. In the Second Half, Guglielmo Vicario just about did enough to tip Leon Bailey’s effort onto the post before, in the 61st minute, Aston Villa had the lead thanks to a superb finish from Ollie Watkins. Emi Martinez then pulled out two great saves to deny both Brennan Johnson and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before Ollie Watkins somehow failed to find the back of the net from just 2 yards out. In the end, it’s another disappointing defeat for Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs drop to 5th in the table and their next game is a big one away to Manchester City. As for Aston Villa, what a result for them. Villa move into the Top 4 and their next two games are at home to Legia Warsaw and away to Bournemouth.

Luton 2-1 Crystal Palace

For the first time in their history, Luton Town won a Premier League game at Kenilworth Road! Thomas Kaminski pulled out a really good double-save to deny Crystal Palace from taking the lead early on before Odsonne Edouard thought he’d put Palace in front in the 67th minute. However, the goal was then ruled out due to an unfortunate handball by Edouard. Just 5 minutes later and Luton had the lead through Teden Mengi. Mengi’s finish was actually really good. However, Luton’s lead lasted just two minutes as Crystal Palace had their equaliser for Michael Olise. Olise did everything by himself before he finished superbly to score a cracking solo goal. In the 83rd minute, Luton retook the lead as Jacob Brown scored after some questionable defending by both Joachim Andersen and Sam Johnstone. And then, in the 103rd minute, Michael Olise’s cross was met by the head of Jefferson Lerma, but Lerma could only hit the woodwork before Sam Johnstone denied Elijah Adebayo on the counter-attack. Overall, what a special day for everyone involved with Luton Town Football Club! The Hatters stay 17th in the table and their next game is at Brentford this Saturday. As for Crystal Palace, they’re definitely struggling a bit right now. The Eagles stay 13th in the league and they play away to London Rivals West Ham next time out.

Burnley 1-2 West Ham

Two late goals were enough for West Ham United to break Burnley hearts! Alphonse Areola pulled out a decent save to deny Luca Koleosho before Zeki Amdouni had a decent chance to put Burnley in front, but he poorly headed the ball wide of the target. Burnley were then screaming for a penalty after Koleosho was brought down by Vladimir Coufal, but the referee didn’t give it. This was a shocking decision by the on-field referee, especially as he was looking right at the contact. Anyway, Burnley were awarded a penalty early in the Second Half as Koleosho was once again brought down, this time by Mohammed Kudus. Jay Rodriguez then stepped up from 12 yards out and scored to give Burnley the lead after 49 minutes. Areola then pulled out a decent save to deny Amdouni giving the hosts a second before West Ham were level in the 86th minute through a Dara O’Shea own goal. The bit of play by Divin Mubama before the ball found its way into the back of the net was superb. And then, in the 91st minute, Tomas Soucek finished off from close range to secure a late winner for the visitors. In the end, this is a devastating defeat for Burnley. The Clarets remain bottom of the league and their next game is a must-win fixture at home to Sheffield United. As for West Ham United, they got away with one here, but fair play to them for scoring the late goals. The Hammers stay 9th in the table and their next two games are away to TSC Backa Topola and at home to London Rivals Crystal Palace.

Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool

Nothing was quite able to separate Manchester City and Liverpool in a close-fought game at the Etihad. Ederson pulled out a good save to deny Darwin Nunez in the First Half before Manchester City took the lead in the 27th minute through Erling Haaland. Alisson made a mess of his clearance before Nathan Ake did a superb run to play Haaland in who scored his 50th Premier League goal after just 48 games. Alisson then pulled out a good save of his own to keep Phil Foden’s effort out before Julian Alvarez missed a good opportunity in the Second Half. Alvarez really should’ve done better. In the 67th minute, Ruben Dias put the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out due to Manuel Akanji being in the vicinity of Alisson. In my opinion, this is a really poor decision that just shows that referees protect Goalkeepers way too much. And then, in the 80th minute, Liverpool had their equaliser thanks to a really nice finish from Trent Alexander-Arnold. Man City then almost won it right at the death, but no one was there at the back post to tap home after Haaland’s original header. In the end, Manchester City will be disappointed to have only drawn this game. City drop to second in the table and they host RB Leipzig tonight before they host Tottenham in a big Super Sunday clash. As for Liverpool, they should be rather pleased with this result. Liverpool are now third in the league and their next two games are both at home against LASK and Fulham.

Brentford 0-1 Arsenal

Aaron Ramsdale, who started this game due to David Raya being on loan from Brentford, made a terrible mistake early on, but fortunately for him, Declan Rice was there to block Bryan Mbeumo’s effort. It’s also worth mentioning that Yoane Wissa probably should’ve scored on the rebound. In the 42nd minute, Arsenal thought they’d taken the lead through Leandro Trossard. However, the goal was ruled out for a quite ridiculous offside. I really cannot stand VAR! In the Second Half, Oleksandr Zinchenko pulled out a terrific block to deny Neal Maupay from scoring before Maupay had another chance straight away which he completely made a mess of. And then, in the 89th minute, Arsenal finally broke the deadlock curtesy of Kai Havertz. In the end, it’s another tough defeat to take for Brentford. The Bees remain 11th and they host Luton next time out. As for Arsenal, this is a big win for them. The Gunners are now back to being top of the league and their next two games are both at home against Lens and Wolves.
