2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 11

Manchester City 6-1 Bournemouth

Manchester City put on another sublime performance as they smashed AFC Bournemouth for 6 (1). Erling Haaland's headed effort deflected onto the post early in the game, but Manchester City were able to take the lead in the 30th minute through Jeremy Doku. After a lovely bit of play by Doku, Man City were 2-0 up in the 33rd minute through a Bernardo Silva goal before Manuel Akanji made it 3-0 after 37 minutes. In the 64th minute, Jeremy Doku was at it again as this time, he set Phil Foden up who finished well to make it 4-0 to the hosts. Luis Sinisterra was able to at least give the Bournemouth fans something to celebrate with a goal in the 74th minute, but Bernardo Silva then punished them in the 83rd minute with a great finish after a terrific pass from Jeremy Doku (his 4th assist of the afternoon). In the 88th minute, Manchester City made it 6-1 as Nathan Ake got in on the act. Overall, this was a terrific day for Manchester City. City move back to the top of the league and they host Young Boys in the Champions League tonight before they go to Chelsea on Sunday. As for AFC Bournemouth, this is definitely a day to forget. The Cherries drop back inside the Relegation Zone (in 18th) and they host Newcastle next time out.

Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur’s unbeaten start to the Premier League Season came to a dramatic end at home to London Rivals Chelsea. Tottenham found themselves in front after just 6 minutes thanks to Dejan Kulusevski’s effort taking a big deflection off of Levi Colwill. Chelsea then thought they were level in the 21st minute through Raheem Sterling, but the goal was then ruled out due to the ball hitting Sterling in the arm during the build-up. Chelsea then had another goal ruled out as after Moises Caicedo put the ball into the back of the net with a great strike, it was deemed that Nicolas Jackson was in an offside position which seems pretty stupid to me. However, whilst all of that was going on, Chelsea were then handed a penalty after VAR deemed that Cristian Romero fouled Enzo Fernandez. To make matters worse for Tottenham, Romero was sent off as his tackle was seen to be reckless. I don’t think he can have any complaints about that decision other than the fact that Chelsea should’ve already been given a goal. Anyway, Cole Palmer stepped up and just about scored from the spot to level the game up at 1-1 (in the 35th minute). 10 minutes into the Second Half and Spurs were down to 9 men as Iyenoma Udogie was shown a second Yellow Card. I really have no idea what Udogie was thinking here. In the 75th minute, Chelsea took the lead as Nicolas Jackson scored a vital goal in his career. However, Jackson wasn’t done there as not only did he make it 3-1 to Chelsea in the 94th, but Jackson then completed his hat-trick with a 97th-minute goal! In the end, I don’t think Tottenham Hotspur fans were expecting this before the game kicked off! Spurs drop to second in the league and their next game is away to Wolves. As for Chelsea, this is a big result for them. The Blues rise to 10th in the table and they host Manchester City next time out.

Brentford 3-2 West Ham

Brentford found themselves in front after 11 minutes through Neal Maupay, and all I have to say about this goal is it was a mess from a West Ham point of view. However, West Ham were then able to get back on level terms in the 19th minute thanks to a terrific overhead kick by Mohammed Kudus. 7 minutes later and West Ham were in front thanks to yet another goal from Jarrod Bowen. Mohammed Kudus originally hit the post, but the ball fell right into the path of Bowen who tapped home to put the visitors in front. West Ham then should’ve been 3-1 up, but Michail Antonio took the ball away from Said Benrahma which cost the former Brentford man from scoring an easy goal. Bryan Mbeumo then had two great chances for Brentford, but both times his effort went just wide of the post. In the 55th minute, the hosts were able to level the game up at 2-2 thanks to a Konstantinos Mavropanos own goal. And then, in the 69th minute, Brentford retook the lead through a headed finish by Nathan Collins. The ball in from Mathias Jensen was sublime. Overall, this was a really good win for Brentford. The Bees move up to 9th in the table and they go to Liverpool next time out. As for West Ham United, it’s now 3 consecutive defeats in the league for them. The Hammers drop to 12th in the table and their next two games are both at home against Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest.

Sheffield United 2-1 Wolves

A 100th-minute penalty was enough for Sheffield United to finally pick up their first victory of the season (at the expense of Wolverhampton Wanderers). Hwang Hee-Chan had a great chance to put Wolves in front in the First Half, but he completely made a mess of the shot before the ball hit Rayan Ait Nouri and went just wide of the post. Nelson Semedo then had a chance to score, but he stupidly decided to pass and I really don’t know why he did that. In the 72nd minute, Sheffield United punished Wolves as Cameron Archer scored with a terrific strike to put the hosts in front. Whilst the defending by Wolves was a bit of a mess, it was still a terrific effort by Archer. In the 89th minute, Wolves had their equaliser through Jean-Ricner Bellegarde after the ball took a deflection off a Sheffield United defender. And then, in additional time at the end of the game, Sheffield U were awarded a penalty after Fabio Silva was deemed to have fouled George Baldock. I really don’t get how referees are so bad sometimes. Anyway, Ollie Norwood stepped up and smashed the ball home to secure a huge 3 points for Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. In the end, this is a big result for Sheffield United. The Blades (do) remain bottom of the league and they go to Brighton next time out. As for Wolverhampton Wanderers, it looks like another dodgy decision has gone against them. Wolves drop to 14th in the table and their next game sees them host Tottenham.

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s winning run came to an end as Nottingham Forest picked up a great victory. Nottingham Forest found themselves after just 5 minutes thanks to a terrific strike/finish by Ola Aina. Nicolo Zaniolo was then denied by Odisseas Vlachodimos in the First Half before, in the Second Half, Orel Mangala made it 2-0 to Nottingham Forest less than 2 minutes after the restart. This was a complete mess on the part of Emiliano Martinez. Nicolas Dominguez then had a decent chance which he struck straight at Emi Martinez before Ollie Watkins had a really good chance which he failed to take completely. Overall, this was a great and much-needed win for Nottingham Forest. Forest climb up to 13th in the table and they go to West Ham next time out. As for Aston Villa, they’ll be really disappointed with this result. Villa stay 5th in the league and they host both AZ Alkmaar and Fulham in the upcoming week.

Burnley 0-2 Crystal Palace

Zeki Amdouni had a good chance to put Burnley in front early on, but he poorly headed the ball wide of the goal. In the 22nd minute, Crystal Palace took the lead after Jeffrey Schlupp tapped in from close range. Jordan Beyer was all over the place for Burnley here. Johann Berg Gudmundsson was then unlucky as his headed effort went just wide of the post before Gudmundsson had another good chance which he failed to take in the Second Half. Burnley then created more chances, but were this time denied by Sam Johnstone before, in the 94th minute, Tyrick Mitchell punished them to seal all 3 points for Crystal Palace. In the end, it’s yet another disappointing defeat for Burnley. The Clarets remain in 19th place and they go to Arsenal next time out. As for Crystal Palace, this was a good win for them. The Eagles rise to 11th in the table and their next game is at home to Everton.

Luton 1-1 Liverpool

A late, late goal from Luis Diaz was enough for Liverpool to deny Luton Town a famous victory. Darwin Nunez had a good chance to put Liverpool in front in the First Half, but he could only guide his effort onto the crossbar. Darwin Nunez then had another chance which was saved by Thomas Kaminski before Kaminski pulled out a good save to deny Diogo Jota. In the Second Half, Alisson pulled out a good save to deny Carlton Morris before Darwin Nunez missed an absolute sitter from about 3 yards out as he blasted the ball well over the bar! In the 80th minute, Luton got their goal through Tahith Chong to take a dramatic lead. However, the hosts weren’t quite able to hold on as in the 95th minute, Luis Diaz scored a huge goal to rescue a point for the visitors. In the end, it’s a good result for Luton Town, but it could’ve been a lot more. The Hatters move back out of the Relegation Zone and up to 17th and they go to Manchester United next time out. As for Liverpool, this is definitely two points lost for them, but it could also be one point gained come the end of the season. The Reds move up to third in the league and their next two games are away to Toulouse and at home to Brentford.

Everton 1-1 Brighton

Whilst Bart Verbruggen was able to deny Abdoulaye Doucoure, the Brighton Goalie wasn’t able to deny Vitalii Mykolenko who scored after his effort took a big deflection off Lewis Dunk to give Everton the lead after just 7 minutes. Lewis Dunk then thought he’d made up for it with a fantastic finish, but his goal was unfortunately ruled out for offside. It was certainly a close call. Skipping all the way to the 84th minute, and after a nice bit of play by Kaoru Mitoma, the ball took a big deflection off of the knee of Ashley Young and looped all the way into the back of the net to give Brighton their equaliser. Both teams were unfortunate with the goals they conceded in this game. In the end, it’s an alright point for Everton, but they would’ve wanted more considering the led for so long. The Toffees drop back to 16th in the table and their next game is away to Crystal Palace. As for Brighton and Hove Albion, it’s another league game without a win. The Seagulls stay 7th in the league and their next two games are away to Ajax and at home to Sheffield United.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

A controversial goal was enough for Newcastle United to inflict Arsenal’s first Premier League defeat of the season. Newcastle arguably should’ve been down to 10 men in the first half after Bruno Guimaraes swung his arm at Jorginho. It’s not the first time this season that both Guimaraes and Arsenal have been involved in a Red Card debate. After a bit of a mess from an Arsenal defensive point of view, Anthony Gordon tapped home to give Newcastle the lead in the 64th minute. However, the replays clearly showed that the ball went out of play and also, Gordon was offside. However, none of this seemed to matter to the referees and VAR as the goal was given. What a complete and utter mess the “refereeing department” is. In the end, this is an important 3 points for Newcastle United. The Magpies stay 6th in the table and they face a big test in Dortmund tonight before they go to Bournemouth on Saturday. As for Arsenal, you have to feel a bit sorry for them. The Gunners drop to 4th in the league and their next two games are at home to both Sevilla and Burnley.

Fulham 0-1 Manchester United

Another late Manchester United goal was enough for Eric ten Hag’s side to pick up a much-needed victory. Manchester United thought they’d taken the lead after just 8 minutes through Scott McTominay, but the goal was ruled out due to Harry Maguire being offside in the build-up. In the Second Half, Andre Onana pulled out two good saves to deny both Harry Wilson and Joao Palhinha, but I can’t help but feel like Palhinha should’ve done better. Anthony Martial then had a good chance which he failed to take before, in the 91st minute, Fulham made an absolute mess of clearing the ball and it ultimately led to Bruno Fernandes scoring a crucial winner for Manchester United. What made it worse from a Fulham point of view is the fact that Bernd Leno probably should’ve saved it. In the end, it’s a disappointing result for Fulham all things considered. The Cottagers drop to 15th in the table and they go to Aston Villa next time out. As for Manchester United, they needed this result. United remain in 8th place and their next two games are away to Copenhagen and at home to Luton.
