2023/24 Premier League Roundup: Gameweek 10

Arsenal 5-0 Sheffield United

Arsenal put five past Sheffield United in a dominant outing. Arsenal took the lead after 28 minutes through Eddie Nketiah after a great pass by Declan Rice. 5 minutes into the Second Half and Arsenal were 2-0 up thanks to Eddie Nketiah (and a terrible bit of goalkeeping by Wesley Foderingham) before Nketiah wrapped up his hat-trick in the 58th minute with a fantastic strike. Sheffield United then made an absolute mess of it at the back which resulted in Arsenal being awarded a penalty after Ollie Norwood fouled Fabio Viera (which the referee didn’t originally spot somehow). Viera stepped up from 12 yards out and scored to make it 4-0 to the hosts before Takehiro Tomiyasu decided to add a fifth in the 96th minute. Overall, this was a pretty easy day for Arsenal. The Gunners move back up to second in the league and they play away to West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they face Newcastle in a huge game on Saturday. As for Sheffield United, things are not going well for them right now. The Blades remain bottom of the league and their next game is a must-win at home to Wolves.

Aston Villa 3-1 Luton

Aston Villa kept up their impressive start to the season with a comfortable victory at home to Luton Town. Nicolo Zaniolo had a great chance to put Aston Villa in front which he failed to take before Thomas Kaminski pulled out a great save to deny Ollie Watkins. However, Aston Villa were in front in the 17th minute thanks to a really nice goal by John McGinn. Early in the Second Half and Villa’s lead doubled thanks to a calm finish by Moussa Diaby. Villa were then 3-0 up in the 62nd minute thanks to an own goal by Tom Lockyer (he won’t want to be reminded of this I’m sure) before Luton had at least something to celebrate as Emiliano Martinez scored an unlucky own goal of his own. Overall, it’s another win for Aston Villa. Villa stay 5th in the table and their next game is away to Nottingham Forest. As for Luton Town, they really didn’t do much in this game. The Hatters drop back into the Relegation Zone (18th) and they host Liverpool next time out.

Wolves 2-2 Newcastle

Sean Longstaff nearly put Newcastle in front as his effort went just wide of the post before Newcastle had the lead in the 22nd minute through Callum Wilson. The goalkeeping by Jose Sa wasn’t good enough. Wolves were able to level the game though in the 36th minute through a bullet header by Mario Lemina. Again, I’m not sure about the goalkeeping. In additional time at the end of the First Half, Newcastle were awarded a penalty after a coming together between Fabian Schar and Hwang Hee-Chan. For me, this isn’t a penalty, but it’s also not the worst decision I’ve seen this season. Callum Wilson stepped up and (just about) scored from 12 yards to send the visitors into the break ahead. In the 71st minute, Wolves were back level thanks to yet another goal by Hwang Hee-Chan. Whilst Hwang did superbly well, I feel like this was yet another goalkeeping error in this game (2-2 between Sa and Pope). Fabian Schar then had a great chance to restore the lead for Newcastle, but he headed the ball just wide of the target. In the end, it’s a decent point for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves remain 12th in the table and they play away to Sheffield United next time out. As for Newcastle United, it’s an okay point for them. The Magpies move up to 6th place and their next two games are big ones at Manchester United (in the Carabao Cup) and at home to Arsenal (in the league).

Manchester United 0-3 Manchester City

Manchester City pulled out a statement performance to thrash Manchester United at Old Trafford. Andre Onana pulled out a decent save to deny Phil Foden early on before Manchester City were awarded a penalty after Rasmus Hojlund held Rodri back. Whilst I agree that Rodri went down too easily, you also have to remember that the referee won’t give a penalty unless you go down. Erling Haaland stepped up and scored to put Manchester City in front after 26 minutes. Ederson then pulled out a good save to deny Scott McTominay before Onana pulled out a great save of his own to deny Haaland a second goal. I do think Haaland should’ve done better though. 4 minutes into the Second Half and Man City had their second goal as this time, Erling Haaland did head home from close range. Andre Onana then pulled out another good save to deny Haaland a hat-trick before Haaland decided to set up Phil Foden instead who scored to make it 3-0 to Manchester City after 80 minutes. In the end, this was a shocking performance by Manchester United, but it’s not like it hasn’t been coming. United stay 8th in the table and they host Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they go to Fulham in the league on Saturday. As for Manchester City, this is exactly the type of performance/result that they needed. City actually drop to third in the league and they host Bournemouth next time out.

Liverpool 3-0 Nottingham Forest

Whilst Matt Turner pulled out a decent save to deny Darwin Nunez, he also parried the ball straight out to Diogo Jota who tapped home from close range to give Liverpool the lead after 31 minutes. 4 minutes later and Liverpool’s lead doubled as Darwin Nunez scored from close range. This was a really nice goal from the hosts. In the 77th minute, Mohamed Salah made it 3-0 to Liverpool in the 77th minute after a shocking bit of decision-making by Matt Turner. Nottingham Forest then had their best chance of the game, but Anthony Elanga could only hit the woodwork. Overall, this was a nice and simple victory for Liverpool. The Reds remain 4th in the league and they face Bournemouth away in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they go to Luton on Sunday. As for Nottingham Forest, they did absolutely nothing in this game. Forest drop to 16th in the table and they host Aston Villa next time out.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur picked up another victory to remain top of the Premier League. Guglielmo Vicario pulled off a decent save to deny Odsonne Edouard before James Maddison made a mess of his effort. In the 53rd minute, Tottenham finally had their opener thanks to an own goal from Joel Ward. Whilst Ward was slightly unlucky, I actually feel that he should’ve done a lot better. Marc Guehi then had a great chance for Crystal Palace, but he headed wide before Heung-Min Son made them pay with a nice finish to give Tottenham a 2-goal lead. This was a lovely team goal. Jordan Ayew got one back for Palace with a nice finish in the 94th minute, but all that really did was ruin my Prediction! In the end, it’s another game without a win for Crystal Palace. The Eagles drop to 13th in the table and they go to Burnley next time out. As for Tottenham Hotspur, it’s another win for them. Spurs stay top of the league and their next game is at home to London Rivals Chelsea on next week’s Monday Night Football.

Bournemouth 2-1 Burnley

AFC Bournemouth finally got themselves a Premier League victory under Andoni Iraola at the expense of a struggling Burnley. Charlie Taylor was able to put Burnley in front after just 11 minutes with a nice strike, but I do think Ionut Andrei Radu should’ve done a bit better. Marcus Tavernier then missed an absolute sitter for Bournemouth from close range, but Bournemouth did soon have their equaliser thanks to Antoine Semenyo. I have no idea what Charlie Taylor was doing here. Bournemouth then came close to scoring on a few occasions and didn’t, but in the 76th minute, the visitors did take the lead through Philip Billing. Whilst you can absolutely question the positioning of Burnley keeper James Trafford, I think you have to blame Vitinho for giving the ball away too cheaply. I will say that Billing did really well though. Jay Rodriguez then thought he’d gotten an equaliser for Burnley, but his goal was then ruled out for offside. After a 5 minute plus check, VAR finally confirmed that he was offside and I tell you what, it’s incredibly close. I’m actually glad that VAR didn’t overturn the on-field decision because it was such a tight decision, but why it took so long to look at it seems absolutely ridiculous. Sander Berge then had a golden opportunity to equalise for Burnley in the 98th minute, but he somehow put the ball over the bar. Overall, this is a result that AFC Bournemouth have wanted and needed for a while. The Cherries are now outside the Relegation Zone (in 17th) and they host Liverpool on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup before they go to Manchester City in the league. As for Burnley, I don’t really know how they’ve lost this game. The Clarets drop to 19th in the table and their next two games are big ones away to Everton (in the Cup) and at home to Crystal Palace (in the league).

Chelsea 0-2 Brentford

Another poor Chelsea performance resulted in Brentford’s third successive win at Stamford Bridge. Noni Madueke came close to putting Chelsea in front early on, but his curling effort came back off the woodwork. Marc Cucerella then had a good chance for Chelsea which he hit straight at Mark Flekken before Chelsea missed some more chances. In the Second Half, Robert Sanchez pulled out a decent save to deny Vitaly Janelt before Brentford got the opener through Ethan Pinnock. Bryan Mbeumo’s cross was really good, but the defending by Chelsea certainly wasn’t. Cole Palmer and Deivid de Souza then both missed the ball when trying to equalise for Chelsea before Bryan Mbeumo scored into an empty Chelsea net to seal the victory for the visitors in the 96th minute. In the end, this wasn't very good at all from Chelsea. The Blues drop to 11th in the table and their next two games are at home to Blackburn and away to Tottenham. As for Brentford, this is the Brentford that we’ve become used to over the years. The Bees rise to 10th in the league and they host West Ham next time out.

Brighton 1-1 Fulham

Fulham were pretty fortunate not to be down to 10 men early on as Joao Palhinha’s elbow collided with Pascal Gross. This is a tough call as whilst I don’t think Palhinha did it on purpose, his elbow certainly did move in the direction of Gross’ face. Brighton then had the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a pretty simple goal that was finished off by Evan Ferguson. In the Second Half, Lewis Dunk’s freekick effort hit the crossbar before Fulham got their equaliser in the 65th minute through none other than Joao Palhinha. Brighton gave the ball away far too cheaply here. Brighton then nearly won it, but Adam Webster’s headed effort was cleared off the line by Antonee Robinson. In the end, it’s another disappointing result for Brighton and Hove Albion. The Seagulls drop to 7th place and they go to Everton in their next game. As for Fulham, this is a decent point for them. The Cottagers stay 14th in the table and they face both Ipswich and Manchester United this week.

West Ham 0-1 Everton

Everton pulled out a great victory to hand West Ham United their third loss in the space of a week. Jarrod Bowen had a good chance to put West Ham in front which he completely made a mess of before Jack Harrison made a mess of an opportunity at the other end. Harrison then had another poor effort later on before Bowen missed another good opportunity in the Second Half. In the 51st minute, Everton did have the lead thanks to a really nice finish by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Jarrod Bowen then had another good chance for West Ham which he again failed to take before Alphonse Areola denied Abdoulaye Doucoure from putting the visitors two in front. In the end, this is a disappointing defeat as far as West Ham United are concerned. The Hammers stay 9th in the table and they host Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before they play away to Brentford in the league. As for Everton, this was a really good win for them. The Toffees rise to 15th spot and their next two games are at home to both Burnley (in the Cup) and Brighton (in the league).
