2023/24 Premier League Preview: Gameweek 20

Luton VS Chelsea

It is now Chelsea’s turn to face the tough challenge of taking on Luton at “little old” Kenilworth Road. Luton picked up an important 3-2 victory at Sheffield United on Boxing Day and they currently sit just inside the Relegation Zone in 18th place. When it comes to Chelsea, they left it late to beat Crystal Palace last time out and they currently find themselves 10th in the league. In their previous 3 meetings, Chelsea have won every game and they’ve scored 3 goals in all of them. Luton’s last victory over Chelsea came all the way back in 1991 (2-0). For Luton Town, there’s no reason why they can’t pull off another great result here. The Hatters are ranked 16th in GPG (1.2) and they currently have the 4th-worst home record in the league. As for Chelsea, they can’t afford to slip up here. The Blues are ranked 9th in GPG (1.6) and they currently have the 12th-best away record in the league.

My Prediction: 2-1

Aston Villa VS Burnley

Aston Villa suffered a disappointing 3-2 loss at Manchester United a few days ago, but they are still currently third in the league. When it comes to Burnley, they lost 2-0 at home to Liverpool last time out and they currently occupy a spot inside the Relegation Zone (19th). In their previous 10 meetings, Villa have won 4 times whilst Burnley have won twice. For Aston Villa, it’s important for them that they get back to winning ways. Villa are ranked 2nd in GPG (2.1) and they currently have the best home record in the league. As for Burnley, they’ll do well to get anything from this game. The Clarets are ranked 19th in GPG (0.9) and they currently have the 14th-best away record in the league.

My Prediction: 2-0

Crystal Palace VS Brentford

Crystal Palace and Brentford collide in a London Derby that both teams (kind of) need to win. Crystal Palace lost late at Chelsea in their last game and they currently sit 15th in the table. When it comes to Brentford, they were smashed 4-1 by Wolves on Wednesday and they currently find themselves 14th in the league. In their previous 5 meetings, neither team has won a game! You actually have to go back to 1977 for the last time this fixture saw a victor (5-1 Palace in the FA Cup). For Crystal Palace, they have to win this game given they’re playing at home. The Eagles are ranked 18th in GPG (1.0) and they’re currently on an 8-game winless run (3D,5L). As for Brentford, they really need to sort out whatever’s going on with them. The Bees are ranked 13th in GPG (1.4) and they’re currently on a 4-game losing run.

My Prediction: 1-1

Manchester City VS Sheffield United

Manchester City picked up a great 3-1 win at Everton midweek and they currently find themselves 4th in the league. When it comes to Sheffield United, they lost 3-2 at home to Luton on Boxing Day and they currently sit bottom of the league. In their previous 6 meetings, Man City have won all six games by an aggregate score of 10-1 (which isn’t actually that bad). For Manchester City, they should win this game comfortably. City are ranked 1st in GPG (2.4) and they’re currently on a 6-game unbeaten run in all competitions (5W,1D). As for Sheffield United, they going to need something special to get a result from this game. The Blades are ranked 20th in GPG (0.8) and they currently have the worst away record in the league.

My Prediction: 3-0

Wolves VS Everton

Wolves picked up a superb 4-1 victory at Brentford midweek and they are currently 11th in the league. When it comes to Everton, they lost 3-1 at home to Manchester City last time out and they currently sit 17th in the table. In their previous 15 meetings, Wolves have won 6 games compared to 5 wins for Everton. For Wolverhampton Wanderers, this is a big chance for them to keep their momentum rolling. Wolves are ranked 11th in GPG (1.4) and they currently have the 12th-best home record in the league. As for Everton, they need to try and get back to winning ways here. The Toffees are ranked 14th in GPG (1.3) and they currently have the 5th-best away record in the league.

My Prediction: 1-1

Nottingham Forest VS Manchester United

Nottingham Forest picked up a great victory at Newcastle last time out and they currently sit 16th in the table. When it comes to Manchester United, they came from behind to beat Aston Villa on Boxing Day and they currently find themselves 7th in the league. In their previous 5 meetings, United have won all of them. For Nottingham Forest, can they pull off another big scoop here? Forest are ranked 15th in GPG (1.2) and they currently have the 5th-worst home record in the league. As for Manchester United, they probably should be winning this game. United are ranked 17th in GPG (1.1) and they currently have the 8th-best away record in the league.

My Prediction: 2-1

Fulham VS Arsenal

Fulham were thrashed 3-0 at Bournemouth last time out and they currently sit 13th in the table. When it comes to Arsenal, they were surprisingly beaten 2-0 by West Ham last night and they are currently second in the league. In their previous 15 meetings, Fulham have only won once whilst Arsenal have won 9 times. That win for Fulham came all the way back in January 2012! For Fulham, they need to try and bounce back as soon as possible. The Cottagers are ranked 12th in GPG (1.4)  and they’ve lost all of their last 3 league games without scoring a single goal! As for Arsenal, they have to bounce back here. The Gunners are ranked 7th in GPG (1.9) and they currently have the 4th-best away record in the league.

My Prediction: 1-3

Tottenham VS Bournemouth

Tottenham were thrashed 4-2 by Brighton last night and they currently find themselves 5th in the league. When it comes to Bournemouth, they cruised past Fulham (3-0) last time out and they currently sit 12th in the table. In their previous 14 meetings, Spurs have won 10 games compared to 2 wins for Bournemouth. For Tottenham Hotspur, they need to keep up with the Top 4. Spurs are ranked 3rd in GPG (2.1) and they currently have the 7th-best home record in the league. As for AFC Bournemouth, they can absolutely get a result from this game. The Cherries are ranked 10th in GPG (1.5) and they’re currently on a 7-game unbeaten run (6W,1D).

My Prediction: 2-3

Liverpool VS Newcastle

The Premier League’s first game of 2024 sees Liverpool welcome Newcastle to Anfield! Liverpool won 2-0 at Burnley last time out and they currently find themselves as the league leaders. When it comes to Newcastle, they suffered a poor 3-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day and they currently sit 9th in the table. In their previous 25 meetings, Liverpool have won 60% of the time compared to 16% for Newcastle. For Liverpool, they should win this game. The Reds are ranked 3rd in GPG (2.1) and they also currently have the third-best home record in the league. As for Newcastle United, they kind of need to win this game. The Magpies are ranked 6th in GPG (1.9) and they currently have the second-worst away record in the league!

My Prediction: 3-0

West Ham VS Brighton

West Ham host Brighton in what should be a really exciting game. West Ham pulled out a great 2-0 victory away at Arsenal last night and they currently find themselves 6th in the league. When it comes to Brighton, they thrashed Tottenham 4-2 last night and they currently sit 8th in the table. In their previous 15 meetings, West Ham have won 3 games compared to 6 wins for Brighton. For West Ham United, this is a good chance for them to build a gap to the teams behind. The Hammers are ranked 8th in GPG (1.7) and they’re currently on a 3-game winning run in the league (without conceding a goal). As for Brighton and Hove Albion, this feels like a big game for them. The Seagulls are ranked 5th in GPG (2.0) and they currently have the 11th-best away record in the league.

My Prediction: 3-2
